In 2071, after a hyperspace gate accident scattered humanity across the solar system, there is a bounty on every criminal's head. Spike Spiegel, a former hitman, and Jet Black, a former cop, scrape a living chasing them down from their ship, the Bebop. They are joined by Faye, an amnesiac con artist, Ed, a child hacker, and Ein, an unusually clever dog, each of them running from a past that keeps catching up.

Radical Edward turns out to be a young girl playing with the AI aboard the satellite doing the carving. Every time he closes in, a self-styled cowboy named Andy crashes the scene on horseback and wrecks it.
