In 2092 the salvage ship Corona picks up a distress signal from a derelict shaped like a rose. Inside, the crew find a lavish mansion where the memories of Eva, an opera singer who once had the world at her feet, go on living as projections. Miguel is drawn into the diva's remembered life, Heintz is made to face the memory of his dead daughter, and what waits for both of them is a graveyard held together by magnetism.

Nobuo Tanaka, a technician at a pharmaceutical company, swallows an experimental pill believing it to be cold medicine. He wakes to find every colleague dead around him, his body now giving off a poison mist that kills anything that comes near. Understanding none of it, he heads for Tokyo exactly as instructed, and neither the Self-Defence Forces nor the Americans can stop him.

The whole city is built out of enormous cannons, and its people have no daily life beyond firing shells at an enemy nobody has ever seen. A boy whose father hauls shells as a lowly labourer dreams of one day being the officer who gives the order to fire. Nobody asks who they are fighting or why, and the day begins and ends.
