Takaki and Akari meet in primary school and become each other's only real company, until their parents' work pulls them to opposite ends of the country. In his last winter of middle school Takaki travels for hours through heavy snow to see her, and it becomes the last night they ever have. They had once talked about the speed at which cherry blossoms fall, and they grow up separately carrying a distance neither of them ever closes.
