With the military's help the brothers break the plan, and it is King Bradley himself who finishes the man off.

The First Day

The story steps back to when Edward and Alphonse, still children, tried to bring their dead mother back through human transmutation. It fails, and Edward loses a leg while Alphonse's whole body is taken. Giving up his arm to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armour, Edward eventually chooses the path of a State Alchemist.

City of Heresy

In the town of Liore the brothers find a priest, Cornello, gathering the people's faith by performing miracles. The miracles turn out to be nothing but alchemy, done with a fake Philosopher's Stone. Exposed, the priest slips away from the brothers, only to be disposed of by someone who never shows their face.

An Alchemist's Anguish

While rumours spread of a scarred man hunting military personnel, the brothers study under the State Alchemist Tucker. The talking chimera he proudly unveils turns out to be his daughter Nina and the family dog, fused into one. Before Edward, shaking with rage, can do anything, the scarred man takes both their lives.

Rain of Sorrows

The scarred man turns on the Elric brothers as well, smashing Alphonse's armour and shattering Edward's automail arm. Mustang tells them that the man is Ishvalan, and what the military once did to his people. To repair what is broken, the brothers decide to go home.

Road of Hope

Escorted by Major Armstrong, the brothers head home to Resembool. On the way they run into Marcoh, a former State Alchemist who fled the research into the Philosopher's Stone. Once Winry has repaired the automail, the brothers turn back toward Central to chase the clue he left them about his hidden research.

Hidden Truths

Marcoh's research has already been burned, but a former clerk named Sheska turns out to have memorised every page of it. Decoding what is hidden in it, the brothers find the truth: the Philosopher's Stone is made from living human beings. They track down the abandoned Fifth Laboratory where that research was done.

The Fifth Laboratory

What waits for the brothers inside the laboratory are guards whose souls have been fixed into suits of armour. Edward fights two brothers who share a single suit, while Alphonse takes on the killer Barry the Chopper. Just before it ends, Lust and Envy bring the facility down and carry Edward off as a resource too valuable to lose.

Created Feelings

Edward wakes in hospital, and Winry comes to repair the automail. Alphonse, meanwhile, is tormented in private by the suspicion that his memories were made up for him. After a fight and a long talk over old memories, the brothers confirm to each other that they are both really here.

Separate Destinations

Discharged from hospital, the brothers set out for Dublith, where their teacher Izumi lives. Behind them, Hughes works out that the top of the military is tied into everything that has been happening. Envy, wearing the face of his own wife, kills him in a telephone box.

Miracle at Rush Valley

In Rush Valley, the home of automail, Edward has his silver State Alchemist's watch lifted by a pickpocket. Chasing the thief, a girl named Paninya, the group ends up present at a birth. Having helped bring a life into the world, Winry decides to stay in the town and train.

One Is All, All Is One

Arriving in Dublith, the brothers get a rough welcome from their teacher Izumi. Memories return of their training, and of the days on an island where they grasped what "one is all, all is one" means. And their teacher, it turns out, once tried human transmutation herself, to bring back a child she had lost.

Beasts of Dublith

Their teacher expels the brothers, sending them off as equals rather than students. Right after, Alphonse is snatched by a gang of chimeras and taken to the Homunculus who commands them, Greed. Edward goes in after his brother, and Izumi comes charging in as well.

Those Who Lurk Underground

The military storms Greed's den, and at its head is King Bradley himself. Sword in hand, he shows what he really is: one of the Homunculi, Wrath. Greed is captured, dragged underground, and dissolved and swallowed by the being the Homunculi call Father.

Envoy from the East

From the eastern country of Xing comes Prince Ling Yao, with his bodyguards Lan Fan and Fu. What he is after is the same thing, the Philosopher's Stone, for the immortality it promises. After a clash with the brothers in Rush Valley, Ling attaches himself to their journey to Central as though it had always been the plan.

Footsteps of a Comrade-in-Arms

Back in Central, the brothers finally learn that Hughes is dead, something nobody had told them. Framed for his murder is Lieutenant Maria Ross, the officer who had been guarding them. The brothers begin to suspect the charge was built by someone inside the military itself.

Cold Flame

25 min

Cornering Ross after her escape, Mustang burns her to death in front of the brothers. Shown the charred body, Edward turns on Mustang in a fury. Behind the flames, though, a performance is under way to get her out alive.

The Arrogant Palm of a Small Human

25 min

Learning that Ross is alive and has been smuggled out of the country, Edward finally understands what Mustang was doing. Just then Scar reappears and attacks the brothers in the open street. Winry, arriving on the scene, learns that this is the man who killed her parents, and points a gun at him with shaking hands.

Death of the Undying

Beneath the laboratory, Mustang and Havoc come face to face with the Homunculus Lust. Havoc goes down gravely wounded, and Mustang burns an enemy who rises every time she is killed, again and again, until her Philosopher's Stone runs dry. The night one of the Homunculi finally turns to ash proves that even the undying can end.

Father Before the Grave

Back in Resembool, Edward meets his father Hohenheim, absent for years, in front of his mother's grave. Prompted by what his father says, he digs it up with Pinako. When the body turns out not to be his mother's, the brothers understand that their transmutation never brought anyone back at all.

Advance of the Fool

The brothers use themselves as bait to draw Scar out into the open, hoping the Homunculi behind him will follow. Mustang tampers with the military's communications to hold back reinforcements and buy them time. In the confusion, Lan Fan comes face to face with King Bradley.

Backs in the Distance

25 min

Standing before Scar, Winry points a gun with shaking hands at the man who killed her parents. What stops her a moment before she fires is Edward's voice. Scar's own past comes out in that moment: a brother who gave up his own arm to keep him alive.

Girl on the Battlefield

25 min

Hunted by Bradley, Ling and Lan Fan run out of places to go. Lan Fan cuts off her own arm to break the pursuit and get her prince away. Elsewhere May, a girl from Xing, helps Scar escape, and Winry heads back to Rush Valley carrying feelings for Edward she has not yet said aloud.

Inside the Belly

Losing all control in his rage, Gluttony swallows Edward, Ling, and even Envy whole. In the dark of that belly, Envy admits that he is the one who set off the Ishvalan civil war. Outside, Mustang gets hold of a conspiracy that leads to the Führer, and his people are reassigned away from him one by one.

Doorway of Darkness

The inside of Gluttony turns out to be the wreckage of a failed attempt to build a Gate of Truth. Cornered, Envy drops his disguise and attacks in his true, hideous form. To get out, Edward uses the souls inside Envy's Philosopher's Stone to open the Gate, and on the other side he sees Alphonse's real body.

Reunion

Reaching for his brother's body on the far side of the Gate, Edward finds he cannot bring it back. Paying with souls to get Ling and Envy out with him, he comes out in front of the Homunculi's Father. What is told there is how Bradley was made by human hands, injected with a Philosopher's Stone, and raised to be Führer.

Interlude Party

The story pauses to follow Hohenheim's memory of a festival night in Resembool years ago. Standing among the villagers while keeping himself one step apart, he speaks with a cold, tired view of what human beings are. Even so, the man who walks out of the village leaves something behind him.

Father

24 min

The Homunculi's Father shuts down the brothers' alchemy with a single gesture. He then pours Greed's Philosopher's Stone into the dying Ling and takes the prince's body as a new vessel. With his alchemy sealed, Edward has to face an enemy wearing the face of his friend.

Struggle of the Fool

24 min

Wrath tells the brothers plainly that if they leave the military, Winry dies. Held hostage in all but name, they are left standing in the palm of Father's hand. Scar, meanwhile, corners the captured Marcoh and sets about forcing the truth of the Ishvalan extermination out of him.

The Ishvalan War of Extermination

From Marcoh's mouth comes the whole of the Ishvalan war of extermination. On a battlefield where an entire people was burned away under Bradley's orders, Philosopher's Stones were made out of the dead. At the far end of that hell, a young Mustang and Hawkeye swear to climb high enough to change the country.

The 520 Cens Promise

The brothers try to work out why some alchemists lose their power when others keep it. Mustang's team is scattered to bases across the country, and the Colonel is left alone. Into that opening, Kimblee is released from prison and given the job of hunting Scar and Marcoh.

The Führer's Son

24 min

The brothers meet Selim Bradley, the Führer's adopted son, and are invited to his home. Learning that May has taken a train north, they decide to head the same way. Armstrong hands Edward a letter of introduction to his sister, who holds Briggs Fortress.

The Northern Wall of Briggs

On the roof of a northbound train, Kimblee and Scar fight. The brothers reach Briggs Fortress, are seized by its soldiers, and are marched before Major General Olivier. Meanwhile May and Marcoh set to work deciphering the notes Scar's brother left behind.

Ice Queen

24 min

In the extreme cold, Edward's automail freezes and becomes useless. The Homunculus Sloth, who has been tunnelling up from underground, surfaces inside the fortress and confronts Olivier. The brothers and Olivier put their heads together over how to bring down an enemy who is all brute strength.

The Shape of This Country

24 min

Doused in fuel and frozen in the outside air, Sloth is stopped for the moment. The tunnels he has been digging turn out to be part of an enormous transmutation circle laid across the whole country. To get at what is really going on, Olivier kills General Raven with her own hands.

Family Portrait

24 min

Hohenheim's memory goes back to the day he walked out on his wife and two small sons. Olivier, having removed Raven, takes his seat and reasserts her hold over the fortress. Kimblee turns up at Briggs with Winry in tow, while Scar's group joins up with May and Marcoh.

The First Homunculus

Hawkeye realises that Selim, the Führer's son, is Pride, the first of the Homunculi. Edward's automail is rebuilt for the northern cold. Kimblee dangles a Philosopher's Stone in front of Edward and orders him to carve a blood crest into the fortress.

Conflict at Baschool

24 min

In the abandoned mining town of Baschool, the brothers find May, Marcoh, and Yoki. They manage to capture Scar just as Kimblee arrives, and a three-way fight breaks out over Marcoh's research. Hunters and hunted tangle together, and the snowbound town turns into a battlefield.

Daydream

24 min

Face to face with the man who killed her parents, Winry chooses to forgive Scar. What holds her up is the thought that her parents, doctors, would have done exactly the same. With Miles's help, the group works out a plan to get Scar away before the blizzard by staging Winry's kidnapping.

The Dwarf in the Flask

24 min

Father's memory goes back to the ancient kingdom of Xerxes. It tells of a tiny being born in a flask, which taught alchemy to a young slave named Hohenheim. In the present, Hohenheim meets Izumi, tells her that he is a Philosopher's Stone in human form, and heals her ruined organs with his own hands.

The Abyss

Miles tries to assassinate Kimblee and fails to finish it. In the fight that follows in the mine, Kimblee's explosives leave Edward run through by a steel bar. Trading years of his own life to close the wound, he is carried out of the pit by the chimeras.

Signs of a Counteroffensive

24 min

Deciphering Scar's brother's notes, May finds both the transmutation circle laid across the whole country and an alkahestry circle that could cancel it. With the first opening for a counterattack in sight, Hohenheim reaches Liore and runs into Pride. He gets clear, and resolves to go to Father himself.

Bite of the Ant

24 min

Briggs beats back the Drachman advance and holds the north. Envy goes after Marcoh and walks into the traps May has set. When Marcoh shatters his Philosopher's Stone, Envy shrinks to his true form, a small parasitic thing, and is carried off by May on her way home to Xing.

Revving at Full Throttle

25 min

Slipping the military's net, Edward's group hears from Hohenheim about his history with Father and the Promised Day now approaching. Bido finds his way back to Greed and is killed for it, and the memory of him wakes Ling's consciousness inside Greed. Carrying two minds pulling against each other, Greed faces Bradley.

The Promised Day

24 min

Surviving his fight with Bradley, Greed vanishes from the scene. Speaking through Ling, he warns Edward that Father means to open the Gate, and offers an alliance that Edward accepts. Alphonse sends word out through their allies, telling everyone to be ready for the Promised Day that comes in the spring.

Looming Shadows

24 min

Scar gathers the Ishvalans and assembles a force for the coming battle. Alphonse is ambushed by Gluttony and Pride and taken. Bradley's train is blown up, and the panicking military leadership wakes the artificial soldiers ahead of time.

Emissary of Darkness

24 min

Hohenheim lays out for Edward's group everything the Promised Day means. When Pride attacks, Edward blacks out the whole area, stripping him of the shadows he fights with. In that darkness Heinkel holds his own against Pride, and Gluttony, opened into a devouring gate, is brought down by Lan Fan and her new arm.

The Oath in the Tunnel

24 min

Ling and Lan Fan keep fighting Gluttony while Heinkel holds Pride, all of it in the dark. Edward hardens his automail with carbon and cuts in, and a flash grenade from Fu breaks Pride's hold for an instant. Cornered, Pride devours Gluttony to grow stronger, and in Central Mustang takes the Führer's wife into custody.

Filial Affection

24 min

Against a Pride who has taken Gluttony into himself, Edward's group is pushed hard. Alphonse lets himself be captured, and in that opening Hohenheim seals Pride away in darkness. With dawn the Promised Day begins, and Mustang's faction fires the first shot of its coup in Central.

Upheaval in Central

24 min

Backed by old comrades from Ishval and soldiers from Briggs, Mustang's unit opens fire on Central's garrison. Edward's group slips into the capital through the tunnels beneath it. With the top brass in a panic over whether the Führer is alive or dead, the artificial soldiers they woke begin to move.

The Immortal Legion

24 min

Mobs of artificial soldiers attack across Central and the fighting collapses into chaos. Alphonse, holding a Philosopher's Stone, takes on Pride and Kimblee at once. Olivier faces Sloth with her brother Armstrong arriving to back her, and Envy absorbs the artificial soldiers to regain a human shape.

Combined Strength

24 min

Alphonse fights on against Pride and Kimblee, leaning on the Stone's power. Heinkel puts a fatal wound into Kimblee, and Armstrong overpowers Sloth with everything he has. Surrounded by artificial soldiers, Edward's group is pulled out by Mustang's arriving unit.

Flame of Vengeance

Mustang's faction puts its coup on the air as a righteous cause and starts gathering the public's support. After burning through the artificial soldiers, the Colonel learns that Envy is the one who killed Hughes, and turns his flame toward revenge. As he chases the fleeing Envy, Hawkeye follows with fear in her eyes.

Beyond the Inferno

25 min

Hawkeye sees through Envy wearing Mustang's face and shoots, and the real Colonel burns him down to nothing. Edward, Hawkeye, and Scar talk Mustang back from the hatred that has nearly swallowed him. Unable to bear the humiliation, Envy pulls out his own Stone and dies, while underground Hohenheim stands alone before Father.

The Adults' Way of Life

With Izumi and Sig lending their strength, the Armstrong siblings finally bring Sloth down. Father lunges to steal Hohenheim's Philosopher's Stone and is thrown back. Bradley, alive after the train bombing, walks alone toward headquarters to take back what was taken from him.

The Return of the Führer

24 min

Hohenheim pours the souls he carries into Father's body and breaks him from within. Father survives it in his true form. Bradley cuts through the headquarters' defenders alone and squares off with Greed, and as Fu throws his life into one attack, Buccaneer seizes the opening it makes.

Eternal Leave

24 min

Fu turns his own body into a bomb and hurls himself at Bradley, and on the back of his death Ling gouges out the Führer's eye. At the same time Edward, Alphonse, and Izumi are swallowed by a transmutation circle that opens under their feet. Linked to the five laboratories, it drags the three of them down to where Father is waiting.

Sacrifices

Bradley, one eye gone, falls into the moat at the end of his fight with Ling. Below ground, Edward, Alphonse, and Izumi are absorbed into Father's body alongside Hohenheim. Of the five human sacrifices needed, those who have opened the Gate, four are now in his hands.

Lost Light

24 min

To complete the fifth sacrifice, Mustang is forced through the Gate, and his sight is taken as the price. The moment the five are in place, Father activates the circle laid across the whole country. Every soul in Amestris is torn out at once, and the nation goes quiet as a field of the dead.

Eye of Heaven, Gateway of Earth

24 min

Having taken in every soul in the country, Father drags down and swallows the thing called God beyond the sky. On the ground, though, Scar activates the reversed circle his brother left behind. The stolen souls return to the people, and for the first time there is a crack in what was supposed to be Father's absolute power.

He Who Would Swallow God

Emerging onto the surface with God still inside him, Father still scatters everyone with overwhelming force. But he is burning through his strength just to hold down what he swallowed, and everyone throws themselves at the gap. Alongside that, the one-eyed Bradley and Scar face each other in a last duel.

A Fierce Counterattack

Under the all-out assault, the God inside Father slips further and further out of his control. In the melee Edward loses his automail arm and is pinned in the rubble, unable to move. To save his brother, Alphonse gives up his own soul, trading it for the arm Edward lost and sending himself to the body beyond the Gate.

The Other Side of the Gateway

With a flesh-and-blood arm again, Edward beats Father down and sets loose the God that was held inside him. Greed lets himself be destroyed to keep Ling's body safe. Then, to bring his brother back, Edward stands before Truth and offers up his own alchemy as the price.

Journey's End

Alphonse, in his own body again, and Edward, without his alchemy, go home to Resembool. Those who lived through the Promised Day go on toward their own tomorrows, each in their own place. Two years later the older brother heads west and the younger east, and on the station platform Edward leaves Winry a proposal only he could have made that clumsily.
