The Day a New Demon Was Born

Caught up in the hijacking of a truck carrying poison gas in Shinjuku, Lelouch finds a girl inside it who calls herself C.C. As Britannian forces begin slaughtering the ghetto's residents, she shields him from the soldiers closing in and gives him something in return. With Geass, the power to make anyone he commands obey, Lelouch orders the men in front of him to die.

The White Knight Awakens

Directing the resistance by radio, Lelouch moves their units like pieces on a board and runs the Britannian force ragged. With the battle almost won, a white prototype Knightmare called the Lancelot arrives and overturns everything. In its cockpit is Suzaku, the friend Lelouch grew up with.

The False Classmate

Suzaku, alive after all, transfers into Ashford Academy as a student. Behind a friendly face, Lelouch takes in the fact that the boy he grew up with is now serving the army he means to destroy. Around the same time, he learns by testing it that Geass works on any given person only once.

His Name Is Zero

Suzaku, framed for the murder of Prince Clovis, is paraded through the city in a convoy on his way to execution. A masked man steps into the road in front of it. Calling himself Zero, he announces to the watching cameras that he is the one who killed Clovis, and takes Suzaku out from under the army's guns.

The Princess and the Witch

The new Viceroy of Area 11 is Cornelia, Lelouch's own sister and a princess known for the way she fights. She starts clearing out resistance cells the moment she arrives, with no patience for any of it. Lelouch, meanwhile, begins to grasp how little he actually understands about the woman who has attached herself to him.

The Stolen Mask

A stray cat gets into Lelouch's room and runs off with the Zero mask in its teeth. With his entire identity hanging on a cat, he tears around the school after it while keeping his face perfectly composed. The chase drags in the whole student council, the mask is recovered, and the cat is adopted.

Attack Cornelia

Cornelia recreates the conditions of Shinjuku in Saitama as a trap to draw Zero out. Lelouch brushes off C.C.'s warning and walks into it, and the plan comes apart because the resistance cells he is using have neither discipline nor a shared purpose. C.C. puts on the Zero costume to pull the army away and get him out, and the defeat convinces him he needs a real army rather than a rabble.

The Black Knights

A renegade faction of the Japan Liberation Front seizes a hotel, and among the hostages are Lelouch's schoolmates and Princess Euphemia herself. With her sister inside, Cornelia cannot move, and Zero offers to go in if she lets him through the blockade. He frees the hostages, then stands in front of the cameras and gives his organisation a name: the Order of the Black Knights, allies of justice.

Refrain

The episode is told largely from Kallen's side, and her difficult relationship with her mother comes out piece by piece. The Black Knights move against Refrain, a drug that sinks its users into their own memories. Kallen finds her mother among the addicts, and once the stockpiles are destroyed she watches her being taken away.

Guren Dances

Cornelia leads her army to Narita to wipe out what is left of the Japan Liberation Front. Lelouch moves the Black Knights after her, meaning to take her alive so he can force the truth about his mother's death out of her. Kallen, in a new Knightmare called the Guren Mk-II, tears open the mountainside and brings it down on the Britannian force.

Battle for Narita

In the mountains at Narita, the fight between the Black Knights and Cornelia's forces turns into an all-out engagement. Lelouch corners Cornelia and tries to force the truth about his mother's death out of her, and gets nothing at all. The Lancelot arrives and turns the battle back, and the landslide he set off is found to have swallowed civilians at the foot of the mountain as well.

The Messenger from Kyoto

The only source of real weapons and money for the Black Knights is Kyoto, the house quietly funding Japanese resistance. Their envoy comes to take Zero's measure, and he is put in the position of having to prove what he is worth. At the same time, Shirley finds her father's name on the list of the dead at Narita.

Shirley at Gunpoint

24 min

In the middle of her grief for her father, Shirley is told that Lelouch is Zero. She takes a gun and goes to confront him, and ends up pointing it at Villetta instead. When it is over, Lelouch uses Geass to erase every memory she has of him.

Geass vs. Geass

24 min

The one pulling the strings behind Shirley is Mao, a man whose Geass lets him read minds. Obsessed with C.C., he uses everything he can hear inside Lelouch's head as a weapon against him. Lelouch fights back by building a move around a thought Mao cannot read, and finds himself facing someone with the same power he has.

Cheering Mao

Beaten but not finished, Mao keeps moving on nothing but his determination to take C.C. back. Carrying the disadvantage of having his thoughts read, Lelouch works to turn the man's own derangement into the trap. Cornered, Mao reaches instead for the one thing Lelouch most wants to protect: Nunnally.

Nunnally Held Hostage

24 min

With Nunnally taken, Lelouch is driven by panic rather than calculation for the first time. To get his sister back, he ends up working alongside Suzaku, the man who ought to be his enemy. When it is over, it is C.C., the person who knew Mao better than anyone, who silences him for good.

Knight

Euphemia announces publicly that she is taking Suzaku as her knight. That someone from the Numbers should be knight to a princess leaves the Britannian nobility appalled. The two of them grow closer, and the decision drags her into the middle of court politics.

I Order You, Suzaku Kururugi

In the middle of the fighting, Lelouch and Suzaku are driven into a corner without either knowing what the other is. Facing a man prepared to die, Lelouch uses Geass and throws a single word at him. The order to live will bind the way Suzaku moves through the world from that moment on.

Island of the Gods

24 min

An explosion leaves Lelouch and Suzaku washed up on an uninhabited island. Thrown together without either knowing who the other is, they argue in the same words they used as boys. What is sleeping deeper in the island is an ancient ruin tied to the root of Geass itself.

Battle at Kyushu

24 min

With the Chinese Federation stepping in, Kyushu becomes a board on which the great powers shove each other around. The Black Knights force their way into the middle of it, and Zero sets about rearranging the situation itself. Kallen and Suzaku fight without knowing who the other is, neither able to give any ground.

The School Festival Declaration

24 min

The Ashford school festival is in uproar over an absurd plan to bake an enormous pizza. Behind all that noise, Lelouch tells Euphemia that he is Zero. Knowing it, what she offers him anyway is a proposal: a special zone where the Japanese can live as Japanese again.

Bloodstained Euphy

24 min

Before the ceremony for the special zone, Lelouch says as a joke that she could order every Japanese killed. His Geass, which he can no longer control, has already planted the words in Euphemia as a real command. Standing on the stage, against everything she wants, the princess begins ordering the slaughter of the people who came.

At Least with Sorrow

24 min

The only way left to stop the massacre is for Zero to put a bullet in Euphemia. It is Suzaku who holds her as she dies, and her death sets the anger of the Japanese alight for good. Zero declares the founding of the United States of Japan, and the Black Rebellion begins.

The Collapsing Stage

The Black Knights rise and pour into the Tokyo Settlement, and the fighting runs exactly as Zero drew it up. The Emperor's side, however, has been preparing for this day as well. At the very moment victory comes into view, word reaches Lelouch that Nunnally has been taken.

Zero

24 min

To get his sister back, Lelouch abandons a battlefield he was on the verge of winning and runs. Left without their commander, the Black Knights come apart position by position and the rising collapses. When Suzaku catches him on the island and tears the mask away, each of them learns at last what the other has been.
