

The past of Guts, a black swordsman who swings a blade as tall as he is, begins with a mercenary who lives only to survive the battlefield. Beaten by Griffith, a man as beautiful as his ambition is bottomless, Guts joins his Band of the Hawk and makes a name in war after war alongside the swordswoman Casca. But Guts's decision to leave the Band and find a dream of his own sets Griffith, and the Band itself, on a course toward a fate that cannot be undone.

He storms the castle of the lord, who is something no longer human, and cuts the monster down without mercy. After the fight, his memory goes back to the battlefield long ago where all of it began.

The Band of the Hawk

Guts, a mercenary moving from battlefield to battlefield, crosses swords with the Band of the Hawk, a mercenary company making a name for itself. He loses a one-on-one duel to its leader Griffith, having been made to stake himself on the outcome. Beaten, he is taken into the Band of the Hawk.

First Battle

Casca, a swordswoman in the Band, is the one member who wants nothing to do with Guts. In his first battle with them he is given the most dangerous post in a tight spot, and carries it off. A man who has always fought alone starts to learn what it means to fight beside someone.

The Hand of God

A boyhood that knew nothing but the sword ended with his foster father's betrayal and a bond Guts cut with his own hands. A Wind of Swords

Zodd the Immortal

During a castle siege, the Band of the Hawk runs into Zodd the Immortal, a monster said to have lived three hundred years. When Zodd takes on the form of a giant beast, Guts and Griffith brace themselves to die. But on seeing the Egg of the King at Griffith's throat, Zodd leaves them with an ominous prophecy and goes.

The Sword`s Owner

Wounded as he is, Griffith draws closer to Princess Charlotte to secure his place at court. The Band begins to feel their leader drifting away from them as he blends into the nobility. For the first time, Guts starts to wonder what he actually is to Griffith.

Conspiracy

When a commoner turned upstart is given a noble title, the royal Julius burns with hatred. He lays a plan to kill Griffith with a poisoned arrow during a hunt. Behind the court's splendour, a war fought without swords has quietly begun.

Assassination

Struck by a poisoned arrow during the hunt, Griffith survives, shielded by the Egg of the King. Seeing that Julius was behind it, he orders Guts to take care of him. Guts carries out the killing, and cuts down Julius's young son as well, who was there to see it.

Noble Man

Haunted by the memory of the boy he killed, Guts cannot sleep. That night he overhears Griffith speaking to the princess. A true friend, Griffith says, is not someone who clings to another's dream, but someone with a dream of his own who stands beside you as an equal.

The Battle

The Band of the Hawk throws itself into a major battle. In the melee Casca, already unwell, blacks out fighting an enemy commander and falls from a cliff. Guts goes after her and falls with her to the bottom of the ravine.

Together

Waking at the bottom of the ravine, Guts looks after the injured Casca. She tells him how, as a girl, she was saved by Griffith from a nobleman's assault, and took up the sword because of it. What she wanted was to be Griffith's sword and carry his dream for him.

Prepared for Death

Enemy soldiers find the two of them in the ravine and close in, a hundred strong. To get Casca, who cannot move, away, Guts takes on holding them back alone. One against a hundred, the fight begins in the forest at night.

Bonfire of Dreams

Guts cuts down the hundred soldiers alone and survives. Back at camp, beside the bonfire, he listens to the others talk about their dreams, and realises he has none. To stand beside Griffith as an equal, he begins to think, he will have to leave the Band one day.

The Decisive Battle

To end the Hundred Years' War, Griffith volunteers to take the impregnable fortress of Doldrey. With so few troops, it is an almost reckless undertaking. It also comes out that General Gennon, who holds the fortress, is a man with a history with the young Griffith.

The Conqueror

Through Griffith's stratagem, the Band of the Hawk breaks Doldrey open from the inside. Guts fights the enemy's fiercest commander, Boscogn, while Casca faces Adon, each to the death. The fortress no one could take finally falls to the Band of the Hawk.

Moment of Glory

With Doldrey fallen, the Hundred Years' War is over and the Band of the Hawk are heroes of the kingdom. A great celebration is held in the capital, and Griffith stands at the peak of his glory. Behind it, the queen and the nobles who envy him are plotting to poison him.

Tombstone of Flames

The poisoning looks like it has worked, but it was a trap Griffith laid. The queen and the nobles who joined the plot are shut inside a tower and burned. On a snowy night when it is all over, Guts tells Griffith he is leaving the Band.

Separation

Griffith fights Guts to keep him, and Guts wins with a single stroke and leaves the Band. Watching the one man he could not hold onto walk away, something in Griffith breaks. That night, no longer himself, he goes to Princess Charlotte's bedchamber, and is seized in the king's fury.

Sparks

A year passes, and Guts has been sharpening his swordsmanship with a blacksmith while searching for a path of his own. Word reaches him that the Band of the Hawk is now hunted as traitors, and that Casca leads what is left of it. Guts rides for his old comrades without a moment's hesitation.

Confession

Guts rejoins the cornered Band of the Hawk, and a plan to rescue Griffith gets under way. Casca lets out both her anger at Guts for leaving her and what she has been holding in her heart. That night the two of them touch each other's wounds for the first time, and promise to make a life together once the rescue is done.

Infiltration

To save Griffith, they slip into the dungeons beneath the Tower of Rebirth. What they find is a man who, after a year of torture, has had his tongue cut out and his tendons severed, and can no longer so much as hold a sword. Carrying their ruined leader on their backs, Guts and the others escape the tower.

Eve of the Feast

On the run, Griffith is crushed by what he has become, unable to rely on anyone, and by the sight of Guts and Casca together. Alone, he finds the Egg of the King, which he thought was lost, back in his hand. In that moment the sun begins to darken, and the Band of the Hawk is swallowed into a place outside the human world.

The Great Eclipse

In a place ringed by monstrous creatures, five demons called the God Hand appear before Griffith. They ask whether he will offer up every one of his comrades as a sacrifice for the sake of his dream. Griffith answers that he will.

Time of Eternity

Branded as sacrifices, the members of the Band of the Hawk are devoured by the monsters one after another. Reborn as a demon, Griffith rapes Casca in front of Guts. Stripped of everything, Guts survives at the cost of his own arm, and swears revenge.
