Raised as a son to be heir to a general's house, Oscar François de Jarjayes is made commander of the Royal Guard, charged with protecting the crown princess Marie Antoinette. Backed by André, her childhood friend and servant, she watches over the secret love between Antoinette and the Swedish count Fersen from inside the glittering court. As she comes to see the suffering of the poor, Oscar begins to question the life she was given, and in a Paris sliding toward revolution she is forced to choose.
